Here's a PM I sent to Gary that I though I would share, if for nothing else, just to get people's opinions and maybe even a few posts as it is all a bit quiet lately.
'I think the game has hit a bit of a lul at the moment. It's a bit quiet!
It isn't as active as it used to be. You are playing 20 plus years so you are probably used to these cycles.
I think League 3 is about the most interesting as everyone is fighting for the same auction players.
There is a huge Class divide in the other two leagues.
Some of the Prem teams can't possibly be catched as they have had good managers making clever decisions for 9 seasons.
Never mind the coaching in all that time. You cant catch up with that - ever! (Alhthough a few managers have made a fine attempt at it - eg St Albans who I assume are not there from the start)
A lot of my teams have limited potential. Ashmount can be decent for example but they will never break through that glass ceiling.
Too many seasons have passed. That's why I like the idea of League 3."

I have to agree with your points, when playing the big teams think about tactics,I got a draw in cup v wonderstuff,I think I played 6-1-3 d4
On the replay 5-1-4 d8 and scraped a win
It's doesn't always work though
I do get disappointed when someone offers to buy a player and then it fails and fails and then no mention of it,it's happened twice of late and no response
If someone doesn't want a player just say,it's not a problem as long as I or anyone else knows

I wonder if we could convince one or two more current managers to consider taking a team in L3.
Its not too late there to catch up quickly.
I know many managers have more than one team and it doesn't suit them to take another. That's understandable.
Just a thought. I think next season will be really good in League 3 and would be even better if one or two more joined in.
It's good to get a few post on any topic at all to keep the forum fresh

Some good points but I disagree with a lot of what you have said.
The better teams grow a lot slower than the rest (apart from the unmanaged teams for the following reasons:
There is less choice at auction. I've barely signed a player from auction in Leagues 1 and 2 all season. It's rare that a player will be available that can improve my squad. All of my clubs have around £200m in the bank which is always growing and I can spend it. Martin at the Wonderstuff is having the same issue.
The better teams are always expected to win and when they don't, the players' ratings will fall more dramatically than the lower rated teams. The rating increases for winning are less too. Edinburgh have lost more games this season than in any other season because other teams are slowly catching up with them. I have so many players who are lower rated now than at the start of the season.
No one should expect to play the game for a couple of years and compete in the league with a team that has been established for over 10 years but the gap between them will decrease if the manager patiently grows the team.
When I first started many years ago I joined Leagues that were well established as had a lot of catching up to do. It was hard and took a lot of time (I never swapped clubs from the original I took on) but the rewards were worth it.
This game rewards those who stick with it. Look at Paul Collyer, he finally has a team that is in the top two of a division!

I've always maintained and still do that the better teams are the ones that have been managed for the longest time. It's testament to them and deservedly lead the way pretty much every season.
I do think their is a massive gulf in class but I also think I can be reduced albeit slowly. I personally see it as a challenge to attempt to close that gap and eventually, actually compete amongst the elite.

Yes, this is very much a long term game. It took me 8 seasons to win something of note and along the way I had to sacrifice quite a few of my, at the time, best players.
I've always been one for that. Take a good player, make him really good and swap him for a couple of good players again. Even this season I had to sacrifice 2 x 41 rated players to bring my squad age down and plan for next season.
Some like to buy success. I think Dave at Skegby was one that bought high rated and elderly players. He won the Prem in league 1 but suffered a big decline soon after.
It's disappointing to see unmanaged teams that a season or so ago were doing well. Liverwolves in league 2 an example. The start of the season is no indication of how things will be but all because there's no immediate trophy, managers leave or swap to a club that has 150m+ in the bank.
Even in season 4 my squad was not very good so it's all really only come together in half the time Summit v2 has been running. I really don't know how I'm where I am in league 2 right now as, apart from a couple of players, the squad is bang average.
I think it would be quite difficult for a manager starting in league 3 now. The squads are on the move, it seems difficult to sell an 11 or 12 rated player already and the auction is still quite competitive.
Anyway, still a great game and long may it continue.

Good to get a few people's opinions and thoughts. All very valid and well made. At least it got the forum talking!
If the top teams continue to be well managed, it's probably not impossible to bridge the gap, but it is certainly extremely difficult. I agree completely that nobody should expect to catch up in a couple of seasons. I don't think anyone would expect to do that. My main point was that I liked the fresh start with L3. Hopefully one or two more will fancy the challenge of it.

I'm reading all this with interest and taking it all in.
Let me just throw something out there and see what the reaction is. I haven't given it too much thought but... what IF....
.... at the end of the current season I halved the rating and wages of all players in Leagues 1 and 2? It would make all the top players rated in the low 20's. Don't panic... it's just a thought to see what the reaction is. Think about it and the effect it would have before you post instead of immediately writing it off.

I think it would hit the best teams the most. Not sure they would be too happy. What about the bank balances? I presume divided by a certain figure.
I'm not sure if it is fair on the top teams but I see where you are coming from.

The top teams would still be the top teams just that every team would be half as good.
I would leave the bank balances alone as I can't think of a fair way to adjust them. It just means the auction prices would be crazy for a few weeks.

Is there space on the turnsheet to resign from my club and leave the game or do I just make a note on the bottom of the sheet?
This is not for me I'm afraid. Having spent around 10 years building my teams up and developing the players I would not want to see this happen.

Yes michael,I wouldn't want to see the players ratings cut in half, the best part of this game is going up,against the big teams and playing different tactics to outwit them
It's cost a fair few quid to build up these teams

If I didn't think that one day I couldn't break into the elite clubs then I think I'd just give up now.
Time, patience and focus on a strategy and who knows what'll happen it a few seasons?
I don't want to be helped, I want to use luck, skill and judgement to try and do it.
I say keep it as it is but just give me some easy cup draws for the next few seasons.

lol okay was just a thought I would throw out there.
What I will do is limit the number of young players on the auction so that clubs need to develop their own players if they are thinking long term.
I'm quite relieved it would have been an eff of a lot of work to cut player ratings in half. If you guys are happy I am happy 🙂

1. Limit the amount of under 20 years old players on the transfer list and have their rating set at their age. That way, if bought, the clubs will have a decision to make on the now or the future of the club.
2. Have more oldies that are higher rated on transfer list. This way, players and money moves on in the game.
3. Have more contract rebels at the successful clubs. If they're not playing, they'll want to move on.
4. Allow two of each non-playing staff.
