I've been prompted to start this thread thanks to Beesley's team names, which include two of my all time favourite brands in The Wonderstuff and The Bluetones, both of whom I think are underrated, in particular The Bluetones.

So I thought I'd see what other bands you all thought were in the same situation, as well as those that you feel are overrated. Try to keep it civilised though folks, this is just a measure of personal opinion, and I'm sure there are still some topics where we're all allowed to have one of those without getting abuse... wink

I'll start off.

Underrated
The Bluetones
The Wonderstuff
The Frank & Walters
Therapy?
Status Quo (any band that can call one of their albums "In Search Of The 4th Chord" clearly has a sense of humour as if you listen to their stuff there's a lot that's outside their stereotype! laugh)

Overrated
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Ed Sheeran
Adele

I like chilli peppers but hate ed Sheeran and Adele. One time I was out at a pub with my mates and a woman walked up to me and asked for my phone number and I said do you like ed Sheeran and she said yes so I said well your not having my number then and i buggered off to the bogs for a piss.

I'm more into the hard rock end of things and under-recognised bands would include:
Hacride
Rancid
Queensryche (up to 2010)
Fear Factory
Black StarRiders deserve to be massive.

Over rated artists for me tend to go in the 'clever album artists' categories alongside Kate Bush (who is brilliant). I could never see why David Gray or Elton John were as popular as they were. Every time I revisit Howard Jones from the 1980s I'm impressed.

There's also some fantastic local bands over the years I've seen live and then they disappreared. Damn shame.

Mindcrime/Empire era Queensryche were great Cris, but to be fair, they've sold 20m albums... so haven't done too badly. I would have added Heartwork era Carcass to my list, but they were so extreme that they were never going to be that popular, in any circumstance.

Two more to add to my list of underrated bands:
Shed Seven
Ocean Colour Scene - less so for their earlier stuff as they were a big part of the "Britpop Era" (I hate that term), but more for their recent stuff, which I think is brilliant

Yes, that's fair comment, they sold a lot and filled some big arenas. I've just been surprised how few people heard of Mindcrime I compared with other concept albums like The Wall or Tommy. IMO it's my all time #1 album.

I would agree Carcass would be a bit niche. Sunn 0)))) did some great stuff but were perhaps even more niche.
