Players appear on the transfer list with the message "can be bought by contacting the selling club's manager".
I know a list of managers with the odd phone number is distributed every now and again but I'm finding it difficult to actually know how to contact people.
I buy and sell via the forum but never even attempt via the transfer list.
Some managers don't appear to leave contact details anywhere...unless I'm totally missing something.
Am I missing something?

I think your spot on. Most Managers don't leave a number. I don't think I have a number in either.
I think that the Managers who don't use the forum are missing out.
It's very hard to do deals if your not checking in here once and awhile (in my opinion)
I did do one deal with Dan at Peterborough last week by email.
It must be very difficult for the likes of Paula at Paula's Pirates to move on her Contract Rebels.
Each to their own I guess. I think your at a serious disadvantage by not utilising the forum anyway.
But I suppose a forum isn't for everyone.

In the old days we used to do it by the general message page and that did work - but was obviously very slow.
Forum has to be the best method IMO, every time. Dunno how managers get by without it.

I do try to use the tran 3 option and leave my number on the general message but don't always get a response!!!
My number is also on the address page that we sometimes get but again not 100% effective!!!!
The best way as has been said is this forum, you can always get what you want USUALLY!!!!

As I have said before I would always recommend using the TRAN3 option if you have a spare slot as not everyone uses the forum. It must increase your chances of making a sale.
I'm sure there are all sorts of reasons why some managers don't use the forum, I wouldn't want to speculate on that but you are all right, it's clearly the simplest way of sorting out deals if you don't have direct contact ie phone/text numbers

The list of managers that is circulated has addresses but not many phone numbers and it's rare for people to leave their contact details in the 'messages' section in a turn as well.
It's just odd.

Not that I've done it in about 5 seasons but you can then input another Tran code making an offer which appears on their sheet next turn. A long way around getting a deal done.
