Youth Team Player

Hi everyone,
Apologies for what may seem a very daft question... But just as a fairly new manager I was wondering what happens if you buy a player off another club who only has a couple of weeks left of their contract. Presumably when they sign for your club they sign a new contract with your club for 19 or 20 weeks or whatever and the old contract becomes redundant?
If anyone can give me some advice, much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello John,
A player will ask for a new contract, or not, when their current one gets to 4 weeks.
At any point during their contract if their wages are way below what it should be, they will refuse any transfer until they are on the right money. This usually happens after an end of season boost.
If their wages are way above what they should be your directors will most likely step in and stop the deal. This will most likely be the case after an end of season drop or if you buy an older player from auction with ott wages.
I've got to be honest, I'm not sure if a player nearing the end of their contract, 6/7 weeks or less and on the correct wages will be willing to move before signing a new deal.
I'm sure my more learned colleagues will be able to shed some light on this.

Hi John
Yes you are correct. When you sign a player he will assume a new contract which is will usually last for at least 18 weeks at roughly 1/200th of his market value.
There is no restriction on selling a player because he has 6/7 weeks left on a contract as per Graham’s point, if he is on roughly the wage he should be on, unless that player has “recently” joined your club. There is no specific definition of how recent this actually is.
Trust this helps

It would be very interesting to know what tolerance is allowed in wages. The 1/200th of value is a good guide. I've recently seen a player on £23,226, value £6,750,000 successfully sold. He should have been on approx 34k so its an interesting one!
